What kind of volunteer work is available?

Household Duties

There is much work which must be done in order to run a successful orphanage. Daily chores are carried out by the caretakers and some of the older children. Every child must be fed and clothed. It is a lot of work to prepare and clean up after three meals and to provide clean clothing for a large number of babies and children every day. The orphanage must also remain tidy and organized in order for these tasks to be performed successfully.

You can help by assisting in some of the operations. Tasks include washing clothes, peeling vegetables, cooking, food serving, cleaning, helping the kids to dress up and reach school safely.

Personal Attention

The children at GCHH are in need of structure and stimulation. Although they are no longer on the streets or in abusive households, life at the orphanage has its hardships as well. Sharing ones home with so many others means a lack of personal attention and acknowledgement.

You can help by spending time with the children. Every child is special in her/his own way. Showing your commitment to a child and complimenting her/him on their achievements can go a long way to showing a child her/his individual importance.

Tutoring

You can offer your help by practicing math and reading with the children. Because of the tough conditions in Kenyan schools, tutoring can help in making a difference for these children.

Arts, Crafts and Games

You can show the children various arts and crafts activities such as teaching them how to draw, color and paint. You can also organize soccer games and other forms of exercise. Just remember to keep it safe!

Have Fun

You must have fun at the orphanage. Not only will this make the children feel better about their vulnerable situation but you are volunteering because you enjoy it.
